In 1893, Queen Victoria officially approved Australia’s first coat of arms for the colony of Queensland. The design depicted sheep, cattle, wheat and gold, signifying the colony’s prosperity, along with the Latin motto Audax At Fidelis – Bold but Faithful. Over the years, this traditional design evolved and the current Coat of Arms dates from the silver jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II in 1977, when the stag and brogla were added.

The stag, not an Australian native, symbolises connection to the old world – Queen Victoria gifted a herd of deer from the royal hunting ground to the colony. The elegant brolga is the state’s official bird, here symbolising the indigenous population.

This Coat of Arms is reimagined on the Royal Australian Mint’s new 2023 $1 1oz Silver investment Coin, the third in the Australian Coat of Arms Investment Coin Series.

Struck by Royal Australian Mint from 1oz of 99.9% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has a mintage of 50,000.

DESIGN

The coin’s reverse prominently features the elegant brolga as well as cattle, sheep and wheat. The inscription “QUEENSLAND” is displayed at the bottom in a ribbon with the monetary denomination in the top left.

The obverse features a miniature Jody Clarks memorial effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II with the 2023 year-date, as well as a large stag as the centre piece. The obverse also contains the coin’s weight, fineness and Latin phrase “Audax At Fidelis” – Bold But Faithful.

PRESENTATION
